Our Work
Alongside an alliance of partners we are leading collaborative, synergistic coastal & marine safeguarding centered in community.
We are honored to be Mission Blue Hope Spot Champions for the Inhambane Seascape!
OUR APPROACH
01
Biodiversity & Traditional Knowledge Mapping
The Mazuene-Malamba coast and seascape forms part of an area of high endemism in southern Mozambique including lowland coastal Miombo forests - one of only two remaining areas in Mozambique where such intact forests still reaches the sea - extensive dune habitats, lagoons, mangroves and estuaries, freshwater lakes, and coral reefs.
At MM-CC we work alongside traditional leaders, elders, youth, community partners, and shared-value organizations to gather, interpret and share knowledge and science about the area's biodiversity and ecology.
02
Next-Generations: Environment & Wellbeing
We believe in the positive power of next-generations to shape the future of this Seascape. Growing global awareness and eco-literacy is a core pillar of our approach, and we work closely with schools in the area with a focus on ecology sports and wellbeing, and arts. BIMBI WUTOMI - which means "ocean is life" in, Chitswa the local language, is our core program that includes weekly programming in the schools as well more focused eco-camps a the MM-CC center.

03
Ocean Protectors & Community Fisheries Council
The health and sustainable future of Malamba's communities and coastal ecosystems are deeply intertwined. Yet even while this seascape forms the foundation of community well-being, governance of natural resources is almost completely lacking and has never been resourced.
In 2021 we began working closelywith community leaders and Ocean Revolution to establish a new or Community Fisheries Council (CCP), a first for this area. We have since forged partnerships with Fauna and Flora , Mission Blue, and the Plum Foundation to support the CCP with governance and technical training, mentorship, and support for the development of an ocean-based livelihoods management plan. Our shared goal is to co-create a model of community seascape governance that is empowers and supports local leadership - and especially women and youth - and strengthens the recovery and protection of local coral reefs, and estuaries and mangroves forests.
04
Coastal Forest Guardians, The Honeybee Alliance & Family Forests
The Malamba coastline is home to some of the last-remaining coastal lowland Miombo forests in Mozambique, and one of nation's two Miombo forests that still reach the sea.
Unfortunately, this incredibly rare forest system is under increasing pressure from heavy-sands prospecting and mining, slash-and-burn agriculture, and charcoal production. Forest conservation is one of the most pressing and also complex challenges facing communities here. Focused investments are desperately needed to halt deforestation and recover key areas while ensuring people gain access to improved food-production systems and forest-derived benefits.
Malamba-Mazuene community apiaries now produce some of the highest quality (and delicious!) honey, and one of the only coastal Miombo honey products we know of.
